Australian Timber Industry Launches The Future Framing Initiative

Australia’s timber construction leaders have joined forces to launch the Future Framing Initiative (FFI), a groundbreaking program designed to modernise timber design standards and strengthen the industry’s competitive edge.

Led by a newly appointed Project Management Committee under Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA), the initiative tackles key challenges, including outdated timber standards and rising competition from steel and concrete alternatives.

FFI’s Key Focus Areas:
  • Research & Development – Updating critical industry standards, including AS1684 for residential timber framing.
  • Technical Capacity Building – Training new industry experts to ensure long-term expertise.
  • Communication & Advocacy – Promoting timber’s benefits and securing regulatory support.
  • Industry Collaboration – Backed by 13 major companies and the University of Tasmania.

With timber framing holding millions in market value per percentage point of share, FFI aims to modernise construction practices and expand timber’s role in housing, schools, aged care, and apartments. The program kicks off in February 2025, setting the stage for a more sustainable, competitive future for timber construction in Australia.
